How DMARC and a custom Return-Path work together

Starting back in November, we offered Postmark customers 100K credits for doing two things:

  1. Adding a custom return-path
  2. Adding a DMARC policy to their domain.

One of the things I realized is that while we were really clear about what you needed to do, we were less explicit about why we asked you to set up a DMARC record AND a custom Return-Path on Postmark. To make this clearer, I’d like to explain the important role that a custom return-path plays in DMARC alignment.
